What types of escaperooms are there?

Escape room themes

The typical themes are of course those where in “real life” you also have to escape from a location such as a prison, an abandoned site or hospital.

Then there are the detective and police themes.
You have to solve a murder or kidnapping, for example.

For fans who like things exciting, there are the more “creepy” themes such as something with zombies or crazy doctors.

In Flanders, the first escaperooms opened in 2014 and 2015 mainly in Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels.
Back then, there were about 30 of them.
In 2016, Escape room Leuven opened its doors as the first location in greater Leuven.

Rooms have evolved greatly since then.
In general, rooms are getting larger rather than smaller, with more and more technology being used and more attention paid to decoration.
Budgets are increasing but so is profitability.

Escape room generations

In general, one can make the following classification:

  • 1st generation escaperoom: mainly focused on the puzzles.
Little technology so lots of number and letter locks.
If the operator can keep the room uptodate, this could definitely still be a very fun room.
  • 2nd generation escape room: a mix between between typical locks and technology.
Background music with more attention to the decor.
    For example: Surgery (Leuven)
  • 3rd generation escaperoom: more technological gadgets, more media & sound effects.
More eye for the interior and elaboration of the story.
    For example, Prison Orcus (Leuven).
In this segment, there are already rooms where there is no traditional padlock at all.
  • 4th generation escaperoom: Everything is even more elaborated according to the theme with unique objects, special effects and regularly also with an actor present.
The main focus is on the experience.
The duration is regularly more than 60 minutes and the rooms are very spacious.
The price can therefore be slightly above average.
Examples: The Movies by the Push (Bruges), Le Prince in Retie or Escapehouse Emerantia (Leuven).

This is in outline and layout was made by someone who has been following the industry for 6 years and has played over 50 rooms.
Suggestions and comments always welcome.
